5 Ways to Make Your Cat Purr on National Cat Day

National Cat Day is October 29th! While we think kitties should be loved, cuddled, and pampered every day, this is a great chance to show your feline buddy some extra TLC. Read on as a Greensboro, NC vet lists some great options for ways you can spoil your furball on her special day.

Toys

Toys aren’t just fun for our feline friends: they’re actually great for them! Batting a fuzzy mouse toy around provides Fluffy with beneficial mental stimulation. This is great for preventing boredom and keeping your kitty’s mind sharp, and can help fight off the cognitive decline some pets face as they age. Get your furball a few new playthings to push under the sofa, and take a few minutes to play with her.

Furniture

Cats really benefit from having some things that are made just for them. Get Fluffy a new bed, kitty tower, or pet tent. If you’re on a tight budget, you can save money by going the DIY route. Turn an old wooden stepladder into a cat tower by adding planks to the steps and covering it in carpet or sisal rope. Or, make your feline pal a new bed out of a hard-shell suitcase, hatbox, or wicker basket.

Veterinary Care

We know, Fluffy would probably rather curl up for a nap than come to visit us. (We don’t take it personally.) However, your sleepy pet will both look and feel better with proper veterinary care. Regular exams allow your vet to closely monitor your kitty’s health, and make it much more likely that any problems will be caught early. Schedule your cat’s next appointment.

Treats

While you don’t want to go overboard with fattening snacks, there’s nothing wrong with giving your kitty a special treat occasionally. Give Fluffy a can of undrained tuna or chicken in water; some boneless, cooked salmon, mackerel, or cod; or some plain, cooked chicken or turkey.

Window Seat

Naps and birdwatching are two of Fluffy’s favorite things. Let your furry friend combine the two by offering her a window seat that looks out over the yard. To really activate the purr, put a bird feeder up where your furball can see it.
