DIY Holiday Gifts for Cats

Have you decided what to get your kitty this year? Our feline friends definitely deserve a special something. After all, Fluffy is an important part of the family! However, you don’t have to break the bank buying presents for your cat. There are lots of great kitty gifts you can make yourself! Here, a Greensboro, NC vet lists some terrific DIY holiday gifts for cats.

Fluffy certainly takes her beauty rest very seriously. Cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day. One of the best gifts you can give your sleepy furball is a new bed. You can easily make a kitty bed out of an old sweater. Start by stuffing the sleeves and torso with non-toxic material. Then, sew the openings closed, and sew the whole thing together in an O shape. You can also make cat beds by putting pillows or soft blankets into hard-shell suitcases, wicker baskets, or hatboxes.

Kitty Tower

Does Fluffy have a cat tower? If not, you can make her one by repurposing an old wooden stepladder. Add boards to widen out the steps, and then cover it with carpet or sisal rope. You can also do this with a metal storage rack or a bookshelf. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even use a real tree! Look online for specific instructions.

Cat Shelf

Cats love to spy on birds and squirrels. To make Fluffy a window seat, simply attach a wide shelf or board to your windowsill. Make sure there aren’t any sharp splinters or nails sticking out. To make it more comfortable, use double-sided tape to attach a kitty bed to the shelf.

Scratching Board

Fluffy’s manicure habits aren’t always a big hit with her owners. This isn’t really her fault: kitties have a strong natural urge to keep their nails in good shape. Use a wooden plank or even an old cutting board to make your furball a nail-care station. Just attach some carpeting, or wrap it in sisal rope. You can even hang it on the wall to save space.

Toys are always a great gift for kitties. Make Fluffy some catnip mice by stuffing a baby sock with catnip, and sewing the opening closed. You can also use a pattern to make one from scratch.
