Common Cat Care Mistakes

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Of course, we think every month should be Happy Healthy Cat Month. Our feline friends definitely deserve great care and lots of love, and should be happy and healthy all the time! Although providing your cute pet with her basic needs—food, a litterbox, and veterinary care—is easy, it’s also easy to overlook important aspects of your kitty’s care needs. Read on as a Greensboro, NC vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Letting Fluffy Roam

Although kitties really enjoy fun outdoor activities, such as ignoring your calls and leaving ‘gifts’ on your doorstep, Fluffy will be both healthier and safer living indoors. As soon as your furry little adventurer sets her paws outside, she is exposed to dangers posed by cars, predators, weather, and other hazards.

Not Providing Safe Havens

Cats may have big personalities, but they are actually very small and easily frightened. Make sure your furball always has a place to go if she feels frightened, such as a pet tipi or kitty condo.

Irregular/Lack of Veterinary Care

Taking Fluffy to the vet regularly is very important! We recommend that all cats be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their vaccinations and parasite control. In between visits, keep a close eye on your kitty, and watch for signs of illness. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Poor Food

Proper nutrition is very important! Feed your furball a good, high-quality kitty food. Treats are fine, but don’t overindulge your pet with fatty foods. If Fluffy is getting rather plump, but is constantly begging for food, that adorable meow could be a lie! Ask your vet for recommendations.

Dirty Litterbox

Cats like their powder rooms nice and clean. Dirty litterboxes are not only stinky, they breed bacteria and can contribute to health issues.

Lack of Entertainment/Stimulation

We know, cats spend a ridiculous amount of time sleeping. But even the drowsiest kitty can’t sleep all the time. Fluffy will become bored, restless, and unhappy with nothing to do. Make sure she has plenty of toys to push under the couch, and take time every day to hold a laser pointer or wand toy for her to pounce on. A good window view is also a must!
