Keeping Fluffy Off the Counter

Do you sometimes find your kitty sitting on your counter with that smug look on her face that cats are so good at? Our feline pals are super cute, and they make great pets, but they aren’t purrfect. Fluffy has a few bad habits, such as jumping on counters. Read on as a Greensboro, NC vet offers tips on keeping your kitty out of this no-go zone.

Counter-hopping isn’t just bad petiquette: it can be dangerous. Fluffy could easily walk onto a hot burner. She could also hurt herself on a sharp knife, or knock a glass onto the floor and then inadvertently jump onto the shards. Also, keep in mind that kitties don’t pay much attention to table manners. Your furball may very well help herself to any food she finds, or add some fur to your dinner.

Why Does Fluffy Like Counters?

There isn’t just one universal reason for kitties to jump onto counters. Fluffy may be trying to get a better view of her kingdom. She may also be investigating that delicious food she smells. Or, your cat may want to get a good look out the window. Kitties sometimes like tap water, so your furball could also be trying to get a drink.

Curbing Bad Habits

If you see your frisky feline getting on the counter, tell her ‘No’ or ‘Bad Kitty,’ and then pick her up and put her on the floor. You never want to punish your kitty for misbehaving, however. This may just make her scared of you! Instead, you want to get Fluffy to form a bad association with the counter. One way to do this is to squirt your furry buddy with water. You can also make a loud noise: rattle a jar of change, or sound a bike horn. Putting two-sided tape on the edge of the counter can also help. (You’ll be able to remove the tape once your cat has learned to stay off the counter.) Another option is to lay out a few sheets of aluminum foil so that they hang over the counter edge. When your pet tries to jump up, she’ll knock them over. The resulting racket will probably make her flee the room at full kitty speed.
